Powder Room Reimagined — 25 Years Later

Some design projects come full circle.

Twenty-five years ago, I originally designed this powder bath when my clients built their home in Colleyville, Texas. At the time, the room featured silk-covered walls and a traditional wood vanity—elegant choices that suited the home beautifully.

Over the years, the house remained largely unchanged until unexpected water damage required much of the interior to be removed and repaired. What began as a necessary restoration quickly became an opportunity to reimagine several spaces throughout the home.

This powder bath was one of them.

While the original design had served the home well for decades, we all agreed that after 25 years it was the perfect moment to create something new.

Designing Around the Challenges of the Space

Every room presents its own design challenges, and in this powder bath the architecture was the primary one.

The space has several curved and irregular angles, which can make a small room feel disjointed or awkward. Instead of trying to disguise these angles, we leaned into them.

Wrapping the walls in wallpaper allowed the entire room to feel unified and cohesive, visually softening the unusual geometry of the space.

In small rooms especially, continuity matters. When the eye can travel across surfaces without interruption, the room naturally feels larger and more intentional.

Function First: Rethinking the Vanity

In any design project, I always start with function.

Powder baths are often compact spaces, so every design decision must serve a purpose.

For this renovation, we designed a custom floating vanity. Elevating the vanity off the floor allows your eye to see underneath it, which subtly tricks the eye into perceiving the room as larger.

The floating design also adds a sense of lightness to the space, keeping it from feeling heavy or crowded.

We paired this with a wall-mounted faucet, which served two purposes:

  • It freed up valuable countertop space

  • It allowed the stone surface of the vanity to become a focal detail

These small functional decisions are often what elevate a powder bath from standard to exceptional.

The Wallpaper That Inspired the Design

Sometimes a single element becomes the inspiration for an entire room.

In this case, it was the wallpaper.

My client didn’t arrive with a clear vision for the space, but she has always loved French-inspired traditional interiors. When we discovered this wallpaper, we immediately knew it would set the tone for the entire room.

Its pattern works beautifully with the home's architectural details, which include plaster moldings and classic European-inspired accents throughout the house.

The wallpaper became the perfect jumping-off point for the design.

A “Jewelry Box” Moment in the Home

Powder baths are one of my favorite spaces to design because they allow for a little drama.

Unlike larger rooms that must serve everyday living functions, powder rooms are often used by guests and can become a memorable moment within the home.

This particular powder bath sits just off the formal living room, making it the perfect place to introduce something a bit unexpected.

The result is what I like to call the “jewelry box” of the house—a small but striking space that adds personality and refinement.

A Home That Continues to Evolve

The homeowners are now empty nesters who have recently spent time traveling throughout Europe.

Their travels inspired a renewed appreciation for classic European design, and we’ve been gradually updating the home to reflect that influence.

Details like plaster moldings, traditional accents, and layered textures have helped them fall in love with their home all over again.

The powder bath renovation is just one part of a larger series of updates we are completing throughout the house.

Next up: the guest bath.

Final Thoughts

The goal of this powder bath renovation was simple:

Create something a little unexpected while elevating the vanity as the focal point of the room.

By prioritizing function, embracing the unique architecture of the space, and introducing thoughtful details, the room now feels both timeless and refreshed.

And most importantly, it feels perfectly at home within the larger story of the house.
